The characters in "The Outsiders" are divided into two different groups, the Greasers and the Socs. These groups represent the different socioeconomic classes that are present in any city; the rich and the poor. The members of the Greasers symbolize the struggle to survive in a tough society and how such difficulty influences criminal behavior. The members of the Socs have more economic security and they seem to look down upon the Greasers for being of a lower class.
